10 little ducklings all in a row
The final count is 10. Not a bad hatch rate considering we thought she only had 8 eggs! It looks like 4 girls, 4 boys and two unknown. The mixed ducks have too many marking on their bills to tell either way. 2 girls have already gone to their new home in Colorado Springs. 1 boy and the other 2 girls will go to their new home in Manitou on Sunday. The rest of the crew are for sale as well. $5 for mixed breed and for little Welsh Harlequin drakes. The girls sell for $7 each and we should have more next month. Lexus has been showing signs of going broody.

Love it! HOw do you tell which is which by the bill markings? I am very curious. I have 2 pekins who have the same bill markings & next week i can go pick out some khaki campbells. if I could tell sex by bill markings that would be great.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on a great hatch.
The bill color sex linking is ONLY a Welsh Harlequin trait. Females have more pink bills, and boys have darker bills. This difference only last about 4-7 days.
ReplyDelete...found your site when looking for info on Buff Orpingtons. One wandered in to the pond near the barn I lease. It's not my place, but this beautiful drake is very friendly and seems very lonely. He's sustaining himself now with all the bugs and greens around, but seems winter might be a hazard for him unless someone is providing food, shelter, and a fresh water source. Any ideas on how to help him out?
ReplyDeleteIs there a way you can trap him? Lure him in to a pen or corral with peas?
